LYNN, Mass. (March 24, 2012) – The Fitchburg State baseball team suffered a pair of non-conference losses on Saturday evening, falling to Fisher College 10-5 in game one and 5-2 in the nightcap.
Fisher 10, Fitchburg State 5 (Game 1)
In the opener, Fisher limited Fitchburg State to just six hits, while belting out ten runs on 13 hits of its own to posting a 10-5 victory.
Throughout two innings of play Fisher grabbed a 7-0 lead, touching for five runs in the bottom of the first and a pair of runs in the second. With two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, Fisher opened a 9-0 lead but Fitchburg State rallied back posting five runs in the top of the fifth to cut its deficit to four. But that's as close as the Falcons could come as Fisher closed out the game with some scoring in the sixth.
Junior Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) led the Falcons game one efforts with a 2-for-4 performance, including a run scored and two RBI, while classmate Randy Ortiz, Jr. (Danielson, Conn./Killingly) finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI.
On the mound, junior Tynan Flegg (Calgary, AB/National Sport Academy) suffered the loss, going just two innings. Flegg was touched for eight hits and six runs while striking out a pair. Classmate Dylan Smith (New London, Conn./New London) finished the contest, working four innings with four runs allowed on five hits and two K's.
Fisher 5, Fitchburg State 2 (Game 2)
In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader junior Casey Reed picked up his first win of the season and improved Fisher to 3-15 on the year. The second game was more pitcher friendly as both teams combined for only 7 runs and 12 hits.
Fitchburg State opened the scoring in the top of the first as junior Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) singled to lead off the game and later came around to score on a passed ball by catcher Brett Remon.
Fisher responded immediately in the bottom of the first as Victor Lebron doubled to left with two outs and eventually scored on a Denon Rushing RBI single. It was another two out hit that would increase the Fisher's lead in the bottom of the third inning when senior Gary Lunetta drove a 2-1 fastball to right field that scored Remon and Dominic Zaher.
The Falcons showed signs of life in the fourth inning after senior Frank Yavorosky (Westminster, Mass./Narragansett) led off the inning with a single to left. A David Mason (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) sacrifice bunt moved Yavorosky to second which set up a Chris Rivera (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) singled to left but leftfielder Michael Flynn game up with a momentum changing throw to gun down Yavorosky at the plate. The Falcons would get their run however as Rivera scored on a Shawn Trombley (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) single.
Again Fisher responded, plating single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to clinch the victory. Senor Perry Russo (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) suffered the loss for the Falcons, scattering eight hits and five runs (four earned) over six innings of work. Reed went all seven innings for Fisher, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits.
Fitchburg State (2-10, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it hosts UMass Boston at 3:30 p.m. Fisher (3-15 0-0 SC) will host the University of Maine-Farmington tomorrow at 12 p.m.
