Fitchburg State Splits With Framingham State, 15-2/7-4
The Fitchburg State baseball team registered a split this afternoon in MASCAC doubleheader action with Framingham State University. The Falcons suffered a tough 15-2 setback in game one before responding with a 7-4 victory in game two.

Smith hurls five strong in Falcons MASCAC split with Rams
FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 15, 2013) – The Fitchburg State baseball team registered a split this afternoon in MASCAC doubleheader action with Framingham State University. The Falcons suffered a tough 15-2 setback in game one before responding with a 7-4 victory in game two.
After the split, the Falcons are now 2-6 in the MASCAC and 11-14-1 overall on the year, while the Rams are 10-17 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
The Rams offense erupted for 15 runs on 16 hits in the opener. Sophomore infielder Mark Mainini (Hull, Mass.) went 2-for-4 at the dish with three runs scored and five RBI, while junior Anthony Iafolla (Medfield, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Sophomore Cameron Couillard (North Andover, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs on a base hit, while freshman outfielder Jake Wardwell (Hudson, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Ivan Colon (Waltham, Mass.) and seniors Will Crofton (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Justin Forman (Watertown, Mass.) picked up two hits apiece in the game with Crofton crossing the plate three times.
In game two, the Falcons used a five run fifth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit and take the lead for good. Junior David Mason (Leominster, Mass.) led the Falcons offense, hitting 2-for-2 with one run scored and two RBI, while senior Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn.) finished 2-for-3 with a double, two run scored and one RBI. Senior Randy Ortiz (Danielson, Conn.) also finished with a pair of hits for the Falcons.
On the mound, senior Dylan Smith (New London, Conn.) sparked the Falcons, tossing five innings while scattering six hits and four runs (three earned) with one K. Sophomore Brendan Cutler (Lancaster, Mass.) worked a scoreless sixth for the Falcons before giving way to senior Patrick Mercier (Townsend, Mass.) who picked up his second save of the season.
Sophomore Thomas Simas (Cambridge, Mass.) was tagged with the loss for the Rams as he went four and a third allowing seven earned runs on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts. Couillard and Forman each went 2-for-4 at the plate in game two with Couillard scoring twice and Forman driving in a run.
Fitchburg State (11-14-1, 2-6 MASCAC) is back in action on Wednesday as it hosts Newbury College at 3:30 p.m.
