Falcons Come Back in Extra-Inning's Over Wentworth, 11-10

AUBURN, Mass. – Steven Drury Jr.'s 10th inning double plated home two runs to seal the epic come from behind walk-off win for Fitchburg State University. In a game with seven lead changes, the Falcons needed extra-innings to defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 11-10 on Wednesday night at Auburn High School.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Drury Jr. hit a double down the right field that scored Pierce Hans easily from second and advanced Brendan Cutler to third, who then proceeded to score on a throwing error from the catcher to seal the dramatic victory.
The Falcons got on the board in the first inning on an RBI groundout to the second baseman by Mike St. John that scored Roel Fernandez. Wentworth answered the following inning with a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Matera that plated home Scott Ouellette.
WIT took their first lead of the contest in the top of the third inning as Jordan Burst drew a lead-off walk and stole second, before crossing the plate on a double to right field by Tyler Weninger for a 2-1 advantage.
Fitchburg State erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fourth with two outs, as Sam Brown hit a bases clearing double to right center, then came across to score on a single to center field by Donald Geloso to take a 5-3 edge.
In the top of the fifth the Leopards cut the deficit to 5-4 when Sam McManus reached on an error by the left fielder that scored Weninger from second.
Wentworth took back the lead (6-5) in the top of the sixth on a double to centerfield by Jake Mailman that plated home Christian Ferri from first base, then Mailman scored on a double to right center by Weninger.
The Leopards lead would not last long however with the Green & Gold taking advantage of two defensive miscues and regained the edge, 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth.
WIT would tie it back up at 7-7 in the top of the seventh, but the Falcons took back the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a single to right field by Mike Martignetti, scoring Drury Jr. from second.
The Leopards tied the game at 8-8 in the top of the ninth when they loaded the bases with one out and Weninger beat out a fielder's choice to bring in the tying run.
Wentworth's Jimmy Temte scored on an RBI single by Ferri, before Anthony Matera, who reached base earlier on a hit-by-pitch, scored on a groundout to second to give the Leopards two runs in the top of the tenth.
Fitchburg State cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the tenth with Hans driving in Geloso on a single to right field, which set up the game-winning double from Drury Jr.
Andrew Lessard was credited for the win on the mound for FSU, while Tom Gammell got the start as he tossed four innings with two earned runs and three strikeouts.
Weninger threw five innings, yielding one earned run and two strikeouts for Wentworth, while Justin Voytek suffered the loss.
Fitchburg State will be back at Auburn High School tomorrow night as they take on Lesley University at 7:00 pm. The Leopards are back on the diamond tomorrow at Johnson & Wales, with first pitch scheduled for 4:00pm.
