FITCHBURG, Mass. (March 22, 2010) – The Fitchburg State athletic department had four athletes recognized this afternoon as members of the Falcons lacrosse team and outdoor track team earned Player of the Week honors in their respective conferences.

Junior Kaitlyn Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) and freshman Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) brought home a pair of weekly honors for the Fitchburg State women’s lacrosse team, while freshmen Shanissa Sampson (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) and Michael Grasela (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) represented the Falcons outdoor track team with Player of the Week nods.
K. Kelley earned her first New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) Player of the Week honor of the season after leading Fitchburg State to an impressive 2-1 start to year. The Falcons posted pair of victories at the “Spring Fling” in West Palm Beach, Florida defeating Manhattanville College (15-12) and Sweet Briar College (20-9) behind Kelley’s 14 points. Kelley led all Falcon scorers with a team-best ten goal and four assists, while sister Jamie Kelley, the NEWLA Rookie of the Week, turned in nine points with seven scores and two helpers.
On the track, a duo of rookies led Fitchburg State at the Northeastern Husky Spring Open, as Shanissa Sampson and Michael Grasela collected MASCAC Athlete of the Week honors in their respective events. Grasela took home the Falcons top, individual performance of the meet, earning top honors in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:43.25, while Sampson turned in a personal best toss in the javelin (34.66m - 8th) while also qualifying for the New England Division III Championships.
The Fitchburg State women’s lacrosse team will open its 2010 Northeast slate tomorrow as it hosts Smith College at 5 p.m. The Falcons outdoor track and field team will be in action again this Saturday as it participates in the Worcester City Meet beginning at 11 a.m.
