CHICOPEE, Mass. (April 12, 2012) – The Fitchburg State baseball team traveled to Elms College this evening, falling to the Blazers, 3-1 in non-conference action at MacKenzie Stadium.
Elms took the first lead of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring a single run on two hits. Senior Donny Morse (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) started the rally with a leadoff double down the left field line and later moved to third on a Rev Rivera (San Juan, PR/Colegio Lourdes) single through the left side. The Falcons kept the damage at a minimum however, inducing a key double play to hold the Blazers to just one run.
Fitchburg State knotted the score in the top of the sixth as junior Chris Rivera (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) connected for an RBI double to drive home classmate Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) who led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch.
Elms regained its lead in the bottom of the seventh inning as Zack Dreher (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) crossed the plate on a Steve Fisher (West Boylston, Mass./West Boylston) single after leading off the frame with a double. Fitchburg State threatened in the top of the eighth inning, placing the tying run in scoring position, but the Blazers worked out of the jam to keep the Falcons off the board.
Freshman Geoffrey Frost (Ludlow, Mass./Ludlow) earned the victory in relief for Elms, scattering three hits and one run over four innings pitched, while starter John Russell (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) collected the no decision after six scoreless innings. Fitchburg State starter Frank Yavorosky (Westminster, Mass./Narragansett) pitched a strong game for the Falcons, going eight innings with three runs and eight hits allowed (3 K's).
Rivera was the lone Falcons with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and one RBI, while McMahon, Matt Zajac (New Hartford, Conn./Saint Paul Catholic) and AJ Silberman (Meriden, Conn./Wilcox Tech) added one hit apiece. Morse and Nico Iavicoli (Springfield, Mass./Longmeadow) led the Blazers, combining for a 4-for-8 evening with two hits apiece.
Fitchburg State (7-17, 1-3 MASCAC) returns to action Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State at 1 p.m. Elms (8-15, 4-4 NECC) will host Mitchell College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
