Fitchburg State Hits Past Kangaroos, 11-10

Falcons offensive combines for 16 hits in second-straight win
WINTER HAVEN, FL - Fitchburg State University combined for 16 hits in route to an 11-10 win over SUNY-Canton on Tuesday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park. Junior Brendan Cutler went 4-5 with five RBI in the winning effort.
In the first inning the Falcons got on the board first as B. Cutler reached base on an error by the shortstop that scored junior Roel Fernandez from second. The Kangaroos took their only lead of the day in the second inning, with Nazario-Cruz getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded which scored Welch. Matos followed with a single to left field to plate home Barton, giving Canton the early 2-1 edge.
The Green & Gold capitalized on another defensive lapse by Canton in the third inning when Mike St. John reached on a miscue by the third baseman that scored Donald Geloso. B. Cutler would follow with a single to right field, with Fernandez scoring on an error by the right fielder.
The Kangaroos were able to cut their deficit to one on two occasions in the seventh and eighth inning, but junior Javier Lozada pitched 1.1 innings of one hit ball to preserve the lead and record his second save of the season.
Fernandez went 3-4 at the plate with two RBI and a walk, while senior Clayton Beaulieu also had a 3-4 day at the plate, including multiple key plays defensively on the hot corner.
Sophomore Tom Gammell picked up the win on the mound, tossing six innings and yielding four earned runs with one strikeout.
The Falcons have on off day tomorrow in their southern swing but will return to Chain of Lakes Park on Thursday as they take on Gordon College for a doubleheader. First game scheduled for 9:30 am.
