Falcons Split with Gordon on Florida Trip
Fitchburg State University (3-3) split a doubleheader with Gordon College (2-7) in the fifth day of their southern swing on Thursday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.
Collett goes the distance and Dallaire goes a perfect 4-4 on the day
AUBURNDALE, FL – Fitchburg State University (3-3) split a doubleheader with Gordon College (2-7) in the fifth day of their southern swing on Thursday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park. In the first contest the Falcons walked off with an extra inning 3-2 win, while falling short in the nightcap 8-6.
GAME ONE
In the bottom of the eighth inning with one out Roel Fernandez hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Drew Mazzeo from third for the walk-off extra inning victory.
Gordon tacked on two early runs in the first inning with Walker leading off with a single to center. Tarr followed with a double to left that scored Walker from second, who moved into scoring position on a passed ball by the catcher. The Fighting Scots doubled their lead with a one out single to the pitcher that saw Tarr score from third.
With two outs in the bottom half of the first the Falcons capitalized on two wild pitches to tie the game at 2-2, scoring Fernandez and Pierce Hans, who both got on base with walks.
In the bottom of the fourth inning the Green & Gold had an opportunity to crack the tie with runners on the corners and one out, but Fitzgerald was able to get them to hit into a double play to end the scoring threat and get out of the jam.
Steven Drury Jr. was the lone multi-hit Falcon going 2-2 with one RBI.
Connor Collett threw all eight innings in the victory, giving up two earned runs with three strikeouts in his first appearance of the year.
GAME TWO
The Fighting Scots took advantage of defensive miscues by Fitchburg State and scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take an early advantage.
The Falcons cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the top of the fourth when Brendan Cutler led off with a double to center field, then proceeded to score on the following at bat by Jake Dallaire who doubled to left field.
Gordon tacked on another run to their lead (4-1) in the bottom half of the fourth on an error on the throw to second by the right fielder that scored Martinez.
In the top of the fifth inning the Green & Gold scored four runs to take their first lead of the game, 5-4. With the bases loaded a single to left field by B. Cutler scored Fernandez and Scott Smyth. A passed ball followed by a throwing error brought Mazzeo home, then Derrick Frazier hit a single to right center plating in Dallaire.
The Falcons lead was shot-lived however as Gordon tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain control of the lead, 8-5.
In the last inning Fitchburg State scored one run on a double to left center by Dallaire, but the Falcons comeback bid ultimately fell short.
Dellaire finished the game going a perfect 4-4 with two RBI, while B. Cutler continued his hot start in Florida going 2-4 with two RBI as well.
Andrew Mooney suffered the loss on the bump, while Andrew Currie pitched two innings in his first collegiate start.
The Falcons will be back in action tomorrow on their southern trip as they take on Babson at 9:30 am.
