LAKELAND, FL – Senior Ryan Magni threw a complete game shutout while striking out 10 as Fitchburg State University (4-4) defeated Suffolk University (5-5) 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Bonny Lake Park.
The Falcons tacked on two early runs in the second inning of play as Mike Maloney hit an infield single to the shortstop that scored Luis Ortiz from third. Then a sacrifice fly to left field by Roel Fernandez in the following at-bat plated in Clayton Beaulieu.
Fitchburg State added to their lead the following inning when Brendan Cutler stole third, then proceeded home on an error by the catcher. Beaulieu also came around the score with two outs, taking advantage of a throwing error by the third baseman.
In the top of the fifth inning FSU took their lead to 5-0 when Beaulieu singled to right field with Ortiz scoring from first on an error by the right fielder.
With one out and the bases loaded Suffolk had their first opportunity to cut the deficit but Maggi was able pick up a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the jam and preserve the comfortable lead.
