Fitchburg State Football Earns All-Academic Honors
The Fitchburg State football team named 15 student-athletes to the 2011 New England Football Conference (NEFC) All-Academic squad as announced by conference officials on Thursday afternoon.
Falcons name 15 players to NEFC All-Academic team
FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 27, 2012) – The Fitchburg State football team named 15 student-athletes to the 2011 New England Football Conference (NEFC) All-Academic squad as announced by conference officials on Thursday afternoon.
A total of 211 student-athletes were named to the New England Football Conference 2011 All-Academic team, earning the necessary 3.0 cumulative grade point average with three completed semesters at the University.
The Falcons ranked second in the Bogan Division with 15 nominations, trailing just Coast Guard Academy who received 19 honorees. In addition to its 15 All-Academic members, Fitchburg State also had seven players post over a 3.3 cumulative GPA. Members earning a 3.3 GPA or higher were: Matthew Belanger (Malden, Mass./Northeast Metro), Will Gasson (N. Falmouth, Mass./Mansfield), Sean Golden (Uncasville, Conn./Montville), Jonathan Hickey (Lowell, Mass./Greater Lowell Tech), Sajan Thakkar (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield), Michael Vaughan (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook) and Nicholas Wheeler (Ware, Mass./Ware).
This season, the Fitchburg State football team concluded its 2011 campaign with an overall record of 2-8, while posting a 1-6 mark in the NEFC. The Falcons opened the year with a 30-24 win over Becker, before posting a 28-21 win over Coast Guard Academy.
