Coast Guard Stuns Fitchburg State, 59-0
The Fitchburg State football team visited Coast Guard Academy this afternoon, falling to the Bears, 59-0 in New England Football Conference Bogan Division action.
Teague and Lopez lead Falcons in tough NEFC Bogan Division setback
FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 29, 2012) – The Fitchburg State football team visited Coast Guard Academy this afternoon, falling to the Bears, 59-0 in New England Football Conference Bogan Division action.
Senior wide receiver Pat Meggers had a record setting day, finishing with a school-record 211 receiving yards and a school-record long 96-yard touchdown as the Bears even their record at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in NEFC Bogan Division. Fitchburg State dips to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the division.
Senior quarterback Jon Resch was 27 of 37 for 391 yards and three touchdowns while also running for a touchdown, all in the third quarter, in the win. Resch gave way to sophomore backup Aaron Corn on the opening drive of the fourth quarter and Corn scored on a 1-yard touchdown, his first collegiate touchdown, with 10:43 left for a 45-0 lead.
Corn, who was a perfect 5 for 5 for 36 yards also threw his first collegiate touchdown, a 14-yard strike to sophomore Nick Couture, his first career catch, as the Bears made the score 52-0 with 6:32 left. The Bears special teams made a play on the ensuing kickoff as freshman Mark Behne recovered the fumbled kickoff in the end zone to close the scoring with 6:17 left.
The Bears offense finished with 512 yards, 427 passing and 85 rushing while holding Fitchburg State to 246 yards on 169 yards passing and 77 yards rushing. The Falcons did enter the game with top pass defense in the NEFC allowing just 97.8 yards per game.
Despite the lopsided score, Fitchburg State held Coast Guard to only touchdown in the first half, a 2-yard run by sophomore Jake Wawrzyniak. Freshman Tyler Henning added a 25-yard field goal with 4:40 left in the first quarter for host as the Falcons faced a 10-0 deficit at the break.
Coast Guard came out in the second half on fire, posting 356 yards of total offense and scoring a touchdown on six straight offensive possessions including four touchdowns in the third quarter. Resch lead the Bears charge, throwing three touchdowns and adding another score on the ground.

Fitchburg State (2-3, 1-1 NEFC) will be back in action next
Saturday as it hosts Framingham State at 1:30 p.m. Coast Guard
(2-2, 1-1 NEFC) visits Westfield State next Saturday at 1 p.m.
