Van Ahnen improves season-best with 16 saves in key LEC victory
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (October 3, 2009) - The Fitchburg State field hockey team collected an uplifting victory over Little East Conference rival, Framingham State College, posting a 2-1 win on penalty strokes this afternoon.

The Falcons picked up the victory in the third series of penalty strokes as junior goalie Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) made a diving save on sophomore Kayleigh Force's (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) attempt that would have evened the third series at two and forced another round.
The Rams, who outshot the Falcons 28-7 in the game and held a 20-1 advantage in penalty corners, took the lead in the just the seventh minute of play as junior Kristen Sacco (Mendon, Mass./Mendon) scored her team leading 13th goal of the season.
The Falcons were able to remain within one goal as Van Ahnen was outstanding in the cage making 16 saves to keep her team within striking distance. Senior Eleni Aidonidis (Winchendon, Mass./Saint Bernards) tied the score at 1-1 in the 48th minute as she scored an unassisted tally.
The game would remain tied and head into overtime where neither team could capitalize. Van Ahnen forced a penalty stroke series, recording eight saves in the extra time as the Rams out-shot the Falcons 11-3.
In the first series of strokes, junior Allesha Kenyon (Westford, Mass.), who made three saves on the day in the cage for the Rams, saved the first two Fitchburg attempts with Van Ahnen mirroring her efforts. On the Falcons third stroke, Megan Jacobs's (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) shot went wide left, and Van Ahnen was able to save DiTerlizzi's attempt for the Rams. Both teams scored on their fourth attempt as Vanessa Truax's (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) and Force's attempts were good, while both goalies saved the fifth and final attempts to force a second series of penalty strokes.

In the second series, Fitchburg State took a 1-0 lead as Torey Van Ahnen's (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) attempt was good after the Rams first two attempts went wide. DiTerlizzi tallied one for the Rams in the third round, but Aidonidis answered putting the Falcons back up 2-1. Force led off the fourth round and her attempt was good to even the round up at 2-2. Both attempts in fifth round sailed wide of the cage forcing the third series of penalty strokes.
The Falcons went first and Torey Van Ahnen's attempt was good past the diving Kenyon. DiTerlizzi followed for the Rams with a good stroke to force a second round. Aidonidis stepped up for the Falcons with a good attempt while Van Ahnen made a diving save on Force's try to give the Falcons the dramatic win.
Fitchburg State (6-3, 4-1 LEC) will be in action again on Tuesday as it travels to Eastern Connecticut State at 4 p.m. Framingham State (7-2, 4-1 LEC) will also be in action Tuesday as it travel to Western Connecticut State at 6 p.m.
