FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 26, 2009) - Junior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) netted the game-winning goal just 0:45 into overtime to lift Fitchburg State to a 1-0 victory over Little East Conference rival, Salem State College this afternoon.

After both teams were held scoreless during 70 minutes of regulation, Jacobs sealed the Falcons victory with her fourth score of the season just 0:45 into the extra frame. Freshman Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) led the Fitchburg State game-winning drive, traveling 50 yards down field, before drawing the goalie and dishing to Jacobs for the open net score.
Fitchburg State kept the Vikings on their heels throughout the second half, holding a commanding 8-2 advantage in shots and 5-4 lead in corners. The Falcons took pure advantage of their opportunities, putting 12 shots on net, including a team-high five by Jacobs.
Junior Jessica McKendra (Rowley, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) was solid in net for Salem State, denying Fitchburg State for 11 shots in the match, while junior Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) collected her second shutout of the season, stopping one shot in her complete game effort.
Fitchburg State (5-2,32-0 LEC) will be in action again on Wednesday as it travels to UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m. Salem State (4-2, 1-2 LEC) will also be in action Wednesday as it visits Bridgewater State at 6 p.m.
