NEWPORT, R.I. (September 22, 2009) - Senior Paula Bartalamia (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) netted her team-leading, seventh goal of the season but Salve Regina halted Fitchburg State's four-game winning streak, defeating the Falcons 2-1 in overtime this afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, Fitchburg State broke a 50 minute scoring drought as junior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) connected with Bartalamia to give the Falcons a 1-0 edge. The Falcons lead was short-lived as Salve Regina junior Ali Campagna (Westford, Conn./Hall) knotted the score 1-1 with her second goal of the season at the 63:20 mark.
Fitchburg State and Salve Regina battled for the remainder of regulation, but defense prevailed, sending the game into an extra frame. Salve Regina registered the lone shot in overtime, as freshman Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) posted her team-leading, eighth goal of the season to clinch the victory for the Seahawks.
Both teams were evenly matched, tallying eight shots apiece in the contest. Salve Regina pressured Fitchburg State keeper, Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) with a 15-6 advantage in penalty corners, but Van Ahnen stood strong, totaling six stops in net. Senior Devin Eppley (Darien, Conn./Darien) mirrored Van Ahnen for the entire match, posting six saves for the Seahawks.
Fitchburg State (4-2, 2-0 LEC) will be in action again on
Saturday as it hosts Salem State at 11:30 a.m. Salve Regina (4-4,
0-2 TCCC) will host Bridgewater State this Thursday at
4 p.m.
