Western Connecticut Stops Fitchburg State, 2-1
Fitchburg State junior Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) registered her second goal of the season but Fitchburg State fell to Western Connecticut State University, 2-1 in Little East Conference action this afternoon.
Bergeron nets lone Falcons goal in LEC opening action this afternoon
DANBURY, Conn. (September 11, 2010) – Fitchburg State junior Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) registered her second goal of the season but Fitchburg State fell to Western Connecticut State University, 2-1 in Little East Conference action this afternoon.

Fitchburg State took an early lead in the first half of play, capitalizing on a 3-on-2 fast break that finished with a perfect pass across the box (from right to left) from senior Meghan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton). Bergeron’s shot was a quick strike that found the back left corner of the goal before Colonial goalkeeper, Heather Stone (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla) could move across the face of the goal.
In the second half, Western Connecticut dominated play, outscoring Fitchburg State 2-0 and holding a 7-0 margin on shot attempts. At the 42:13 mark, WestConn tied the score at 1-1 when sophomore Deanne Mastrocola (Goshen, Conn./Goshen) rifled a ball toward the net that was deflected by classmate Elizabeth Vitale (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) over the stick of the Fitchburg State goalkeeper and into the goal.
Fifteen minutes later, Mastrocola avoided several Fitchburg State defenders and delivered a sharp pass to sophomore Valerie Lupo (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) who drilled the ball into the back of the net for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
For the game, Western Connecticut out-shot Fitchburg State by a margin of 11-3 and also held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners. In net, Stone earned the victory for the Colonials, posting one save in the complete game effort, while sophomore Abbie Brown (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) stopped two shots for the Falcons.
Fitchburg State (1-2, 0-1 LEC) will be in action again next Saturday as it hosts Worcester State University at 10 a.m. Western Connecticut (2-1, 1-0 LEC) will return to action Wednesday as it hosts Ramapo College at 6 p.m.
