Nichols Soars Past Fitchburg State, 7-0

DUDLEY, Mass. (September 13, 2012) – Senior Emily Widdlson (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) collected nine points on four goals and one assist as Nichols College defeated Fitchburg State, 7-0 in non-conference field hockey action this evening.
Nichols grabbed an early advantage as sophomore Lindsey Rappazzo (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee) notched her first goal of the season, using an assist from classmate Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) for the 1-0 lead
The Bison doubled their lead (2-0) when senior Leah Hartwell (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) received a feed from freshman Emily Broughton (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) and found the back of the cage at the 32:02 mark. Widdison capped Nichols first half scoring, posting back-to-back markers over a one minute span to give the Bison a 4-0 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Nichols continued the offensive pressure as sophomore Jenn Townsend (Wethersfield, Conn,/Wethersfield) crossed the ball to Widdison, who connected for her eighth score of the season for the 5-0 lead. The Bison added two more goals down the stretch, capping their scoring for the 7-0 victory.
Throughout the match, Nichols dominated the offensive end, out-shooting Fitchburg State 39-8, while holding a 7-2 margin in corners. Between the pipes, sophomore Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) made 19 saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while sophomore Molly Melanson (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) notched two first half saves for the Bison in 35 minutes of work.
Fitchburg State (3-1, 1-0 LEC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Keene State College at10 a.m. Nichols (3-2, 0-0 CCC) will host Salve Regina on Saturday at 12 p.m.
