Fitchburg State Rebounds Over Elms, 2-1

Stearns nets two goals in Falcons non-conference victory
Chicopee, Mass – Sophomore forward Stephanie Stearns collected a pair of markers as Fitchburg State defeated Elms College, 2-1 in non-conference field hockey action this evening at Leary Field.
In the first half, Fitchburg State grabbed the lead at the 14:27 mark as Stearns gathered a feed from classmate Julia Pecoraro in front of the cage and slipped the ball inside the far post for the 1-0 margin.
The Blazers knotted the score in the 24th minute of action when senior Tatiana Frizzell collected a loose ball off an Elms penalty corner and fired a shot into the back of the cage to make the score 1-1 after 35 minutes of play.
Following the break, the Falcons regained the lead with just over ten minutes remaining in the frame as Stearns struck for her second tally off the contest, firing a shot into the lower left corner of the cage off an assist from junior Erin Morrissey, resulting in the 2-1 final.
Throughout the match, Fitchburg State controlled the offensive end, outshooting Elms by a 25-6 margin, while also holding a 15-5 advantage in penalty corners. In the cage, senior Lucy Holewa went untested throughout the second half to earn the victory for the Falcons, while junior Samantha Alvino finished with nine saves in the complete game effort for the Blazers.
Fitchburg State (5-8, 1-6 LEC) will be back in action again on Friday as it travels to Western Connecticut State at 7 p.m. Elms College (2-12, 0-1 NECC) will host Regis College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
