Fitchburg State Rolls Past Newbury 84-57

Torres nets 18 points in Falcons seventh victory of the season

BROOKLINE, Mass. (February 5, 2009) - Senior Brian Torres (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) notched a game-high 18 points and five rebounds as Fitchburg State defeated Newbury College, 84-57 in non-conference action this evening.

Torres led four Falcons in double-figures, hitting 5-of-13 shots from the field and 4-of-4 shots from the free-throw line. Junior Colin London (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) aided the Falcon attack with a double-double, tallying 15 points and 12 boards, while junior Tim Graham (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) and sophomore Elliot Knower (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett) added 11 points apiece.

sophomore John Rowely Jr. (Hartford, Conn./Rockville) and junior Kevin Cleveland (Lynn, Mass./Lynn) led the Newbury offense with a combined 28 points and six rebounds. Cleveland tallied 14 points and four boards, while Rowley chipped in with 14 points and two caroms.

Fitchburg State came out firing, hitting 53.1% of its shots in the first half while grabbing a 42-25 lead at the break. The Falcons opened the contest with a 16-7 run and never looked back, going up by as much as 22 during the half. London and Knower combined for 14 points to lead the Fitchburg State first frame scoring.

In the second half, Newbury rallied back, opening the period with an 11-6 run and cutting the Fitchburg State lead to 12. The Falcons quickly responded stringing together a 14-2 run of their own to take a commanding 60-38 lead. Torres led the Falcons with 12 points in the half, while London registered eight.

Fitchburg State (7-11, 1-6 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State College at 3 p.m. Newbury (5-13, 2-5 NECC) will travel to Southern Vermont College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
