FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 25, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's basketball team registered a solid 71-55 victory over UMass Boston in non-conference action this evening.

Senior Brian Torres (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth) led all scorers with a game-high 24 points. Torres shot 8-of-15 from the field, while knocking down all six shots at the free-throw line. Junior Tim Graham (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) netted a solid 14 points and four boards for the Falcons, while senior Jeff Kozik (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) rounded out the Falcons top three with 11 points and one block
UMass Boston sophomore Pat Joseph (Queens, N.Y./Springfield Gardens) led the Beacon attack with a team-high 17 points and three rebounds, while classmate Anthony Brewster (Boston, Mass./John O'Bryant) posted eight points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field.
Fitchburg State held a slim two-point lead midway through the first frame before piecing together a 16-6 run to close out the half. Torres and Graham led the Falcons scoring surge with eight first-half points each, while senior Brian Skiffington (North Adams, Mass./Hoosac Valley) led the Falcon defense with four first-half steals.
In the second half, the Falcons continued their momentum, posting a 20 point lead midway through the period. Torres continued his hot shooting with 16 points in the half, while Kozik added seven points, all from the free-throw stripe. The Beacons cut the Falcon lead to 11 late in the half, but Fitchburg State iced the contest with six free-throws down the stretch to secure its third victory of the season.
Fitchburg State (3-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again next Thursday as it travels to Elms College at 7 p.m. UMass Boston (0-1, 0-0 LEC) will host the Harbor Invitational Tournament on Friday starting at 5:30 p.m.
