FITCHBURG, MASS. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team was recently selected second with a total of 31 points in the 2022-23 MASCAC Ice Hockey Pre-Season Coaches Poll as selected by the league coaches on Wednesday afternoon.
The Panthers of Plymouth University were selected as the pre-season pick to capture the 2022-23 MASCAC Ice Hockey title after claiming the conference regular season and post-season titles during the 2021-22 season. Plymouth State collected five first place votes to amass 35 points in this year's poll, as the Panthers topped second place Fitchburg State's total of 31 points.
UMass Dartmouth followed in third place with 31 points, which included the final first place ballot, while Worcester State was slotted to finish fourth with a total of 19 points. Westfield State was up next in fifth with 16 points, while Salem State and Framingham State rounded out this year's preseason poll in sixth and seventh with 15 and six points respectively.
The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, the nation's oldest Division III men's and women's playing conference, has a rich and storied tradition of competitive success while celebrating excellence in the classroom. MASCAC member schools include Bridgewater State University, Fitchburg State University, Framingham State University, MCLA, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State University, Westfield State University and Worcester State University. Two other institutions, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University, are affiliate members of the conference in the sports of football and men's ice hockey, while Western Connecticut State University joined the conference as an affiliate member in football beginning in 2013-14.
The Fitchburg State Ice Hockey Team opens their 2022-23 campaign on Friday, October 28th as they host the Pilgrims of New England College for a non-conference matchup, starting at 6:00 PM.
