FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 8, 2010) – The Fitchburg State men’s soccer team suffered a tough non-conference setback to Eastern Connecticut State University, falling 5-1 at Elliot Field this evening.
CARMEN BORDONARO |
Eastern Connecticut received a solid offensive performance from sophomore Jon DeCasanova (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) who led the Warriors with four points on two goals scored. Junior Matt Furman (Montville, Conn./Montville) and freshman Jordan Clark (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) were also solid, netting one marker apiece, while sophomore Bradley Fletcher (Middletown, Conn./Xavier) chipped in with a score off a penalty kick.
Freshman Carmen Bordonaro (Saugus, Mass./Saugus) registered the lone goal for Fitchburg State, posting his first collegiate marker in the 77th minute of the match.
Eastern Connecticut came out gunning from the start of the contest, rifling off 12 first half shots for an early 4-0 lead. DeCasanova put the Warriors on the board early in the frame as the second year back used an Aaron Smiles (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) feed to notch his first goal of the season. Furman followed shortly after, sniping the bottom left corner of the goal off a midfield pass from Cory Tobler (Portland, Conn./Portland), before DeCasanova and Fletcher struck again for a Warrior 4-0 advantage.
In the second half, Fitchburg State amped up its defense, as senior goalkeeper Alex Ivanov (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) registered nine saves in the period. The Warriors continued their offensive pressure with 15 shots in the period, but Ivanov came up big, allowing only an unassisted marker to Clark in the 71st minute. Fitchburg State broke its scoring drought late in the half as Bordonaro chipped a strong shot to the top left corner of the goal, but the lone goal was all the Falcons could muster as sophomore Jordan Munsell (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and the Warrior defense held Fitchburg State at bay for the rest of the contest.
Eastern Connecticut held a commanding 27-7 advantage in shots, while posting a 9-3 margin in corner kicks. Ivanov suffered the loss in net for the Falcons, totaling nine saves in the complete game effort, while Munsell did not record a save in his first victory of the year.
Fitchburg State (0-3, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to UMass Dartmouth at 1 p.m. Eastern Connecticut State (3-0, 0-0 LEC) will visit Ramapo College (N.J.) on Saturday at 12 p.m.
