Johnson and Wales Edges Fitchburg State, 2-1

Ventura post team-leading fourth marker of the season in setback
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 29, 2010) – Senior Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) registered his team-leading fourth goal of the season but Fitchburg State fell to host Johnson and Wales University, 2-1 in non-conference action this afternoon.

After a scoreless first half which witnessed a combined 15 shots on net, Fitchburg State capitalized on its 11-4 shot advantage as Ventura broke the game's scoring drought in the 48th minute. Ventura connected on a shot from just five yards out, using a feed from junior Danny Bolam (East Fairfield, Vt./BFA Airfax) to give the Falcons a 1-0 edge.
Johnson & Wales knotted the game moments later when sophomore Gilson Montrond (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater) headed in a corner kick from sophomore Ben Bellows (Chester, Conn./Chester) in the 52nd minute. Bellows hit home on the one timer, posting his first goal in a Wildcat uniform..
Later in the period, Johnson and Wales took the lead as senior Sebastian Bermudez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Wappingers) slipped past a Fitchburg State defender and fed a pass to freshman Jean St. Fluer (Newton, Mass./Newton South) for the game-winner. St. Fluer buried a shot into the lower right corner of the net, giving the Wildcats the one goal advantage and the eventual 2-1 victory.
Fitchburg State controlled the offensive front and much of the contest, totaling 23-9 advantage in shots, but Johnson and Wales took advantage of its targets, converting 2-of-5 attempts on net. Senior Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) made ten saves in the victory for the Wildcats while sophomore Evan DeAmicis (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) had three stops for the Falcons.
Fitchburg State (1-7-0, 0-2-0 MASCAC) will be in action on Saturday as it travels to Westfield State at 6 p.m. Johnson and Wales (2-6-1, 1-2-0 GNAC) will host Albertus Magnus College at 3 p.m.
