Keene State Holds Off Fitchburg State, 2-1

KEENE, N.H. (September 5, 2010) – Fitchburg State senior Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) registered a goal with 12 minutes remaining in the contest but Keene State held off the Falcons comeback, posting a 2-1 victory in day two of the 2010 Xara Classic.

Keene State opened a 2-0 lead through 48 minutes of play as sophomore Danny Silverman (Maynard, Mass./Maynard) and senior Cam Blair (Keene, N.H./Keene) connected for back-to-back markers over a seven minute span. Silverman put the Owls on the board late in the first half with his first score of the season in the 41st minute while Blair added another goal off sophomore Joe Senecal’s (Manchaug, Mass./Sutton) assist just three minutes into the second frame.
Fitchburg State inched closer late in the second half as Ventura took advantage of a Keene State defensive lapse and sent home the Falcons first goal of the season at the 78 minute mark. Fitchburg State continued its offensive pressure in the closing minutes as senior Dennis Kane (Monson, Mass./Monson) laced a ball from about 35 yards out, but a diving save by Owl goalkeeper Paul Blackmer (Boylston, Mass./Tahanto) kept the score at 2-1 for the Keene State victory.
Keene State possessed a 25-9 advantage on the offensive end, totaling five corner kicks and 13 shots on target. Freshman Kevin DeAmicis (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) was strong in the net for the Falcons, totaling 11 saves in his collegiate debut, while Blacker stopped four shots between the pipes for the Owls.
Fitchburg State (0-2, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Wednesday as it hosts Eastern Connecticut State University at 7 p.m. Keene State (3-0, 0-0 LEC) will travel to Springfield College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
