McGeoghegan lifts Falcons to first victory of the season with game-winning marker
FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 16, 2010) – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team earned its first victory of the season, topping non-conference foe, UMass Boston, 2-1 at Elliot Field this evening.
WESTLEY MCGEOGHEGAN |
Freshman Westley McGeoghegan (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) sparked the Falcons rally, netting the game-winning marker with just 3:25 remaining in regulation. The freshman forward received a Danny Bolam (East Fairfield, Vt./BFA Airfax) pass from deep in the right corner and slipped it past goalkeeper Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) for the tally. The marker was set up beautifully by a freshman Carmen Bordonaro's (Saugus, Mass./Saugus) pick on a Beacon defender, allowing the ball to travel deep into the box off Bolam's assist.
After a silent first half of action which witnessed a combined ten shot attempts, Fitchburg State opened the second half with a flurry, posting a trio of shots in the first two minutes of play. Senior Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) kicked off the Falcons scoring with his second score of the season, using a Chris Kleindl (Tokyo, Japan/American School) cross pass to split the defenders and find the back of the net in the 48th minute.
The Beacons answered less than seven minutes later as sophomore Victor Costa (Malden, Mass./Malden) connected on a one-time header to beat the outstretched reach of senior goalie Alex Ivanov (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle). Costa received a strong midfield pass in the air from classmate Westley Trevino (Boulder, Co./Fairview) and immediately headed the ball in for the game's equalizer.
Fitchburg State had the final answer however as the Falcons rifled off 11 second half shots, including McGeoghegan's game-winning target in the 87th minute. Ivanov earned the victory in net for the Falcons, posting four saves in the complete game effort, while Dowd stopped four shots in the loss for the Beacons.
Fitchburg State (1-4-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Salem State University at 1 p.m. UMass Boston (1-3-0, 0-0-0 LEC) will travel to Southern Maine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
