UMass Dartmouth Surges Past Fitchburg State, 5-0
The Fitchburg State mens soccer team traveled to UMass Dartmouth this afternoon, falling to the Corsairs, 5-0 in non-conference action at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.
Ferreira nets four goals in Corsairs victory
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. (September 11, 2010) – The Fitchburg State men’s soccer team traveled to UMass Dartmouth this afternoon, falling to the Corsairs, 5-0 in non-conference action at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.
Throughout the contest, the Corsairs registered a 21-5 advantage in shot attempts with UMass Dartmouth taking ten shots on goal and Fitchburg State managing only three. Corsair freshmen forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford) single handedly led the Corsairs to the shutout victory, recording four goals in the contest, all in the second half.
The first half of the game featured aggressive play from both teams and the physical nature held both teams scoreless during the first half of play. In the second half, Ferreira finally broke the scoring silence, taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Anthony dos Santos (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) and firing a shot pass Falcons goalkeeper, sophomore Even DeAmicis (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex).
Later in the period, the Corsairs found themselves with a free kick opportunity in the 64th minute of the match as freshmen defender Alex Machado (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) stood in and found the top corner of the goal, making it 2-0 in favor of UMass Dartmouth.
From there, the Corsairs continued to soar as Ferreira blasted his second goal of the contest past DeAmicis at the end of the 75th minute. Ferreira then found his groove, tallying back-to-back markers over a ten minute span to wrap up the Corsairs scoring and clinch UMass Dartmouth’s third straight victory.
UMass Dartmouth controlled possession for most of the contest, totaling a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks and a whopping 17 shots in the second half. Sophomore Mike Phelan (Carver, Mass./Carver) earned the victory in net for the Corsairs, posting three saves for the complete game shutout, while DeAmicis finished with five stops for the Falcons.
Fitchburg State (0-4, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Thursday as it hosts UMass Boston at 7 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (3-0, 0-0 LEC) will visit Salem State University on Wednesday as well with the match starting at 7 p.m.
