Fitchburg State Ranked Eighth In Pre-Season Coaches Poll

Salem State chosen to defend MASCAC Championship

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. (August 23, 2011) –  The Fitchburg State men’s soccer team was recently selected eighth in the MASCAC Pre-Season Coaches Poll as selected by the league coaches Monday afternoon.

The Vikings of Salem State University were chosen as the pre-season pick to win the 2011 MASCAC Men’s Soccer championship after claiming each of the last two tournament titles. The Vikings captured three first place votes to amass 56 points and eke out second place Bridgewater State University, who totaled 55 points and four first place votes.

Defending MASCAC regular season champion Westfield State finished third overall with 49 points, while Framingham State (which received the other first place vote) and MCLA follow in fourth and fifth place with 44 and 30 points, respectively. Mass-Maritime collected 21 points in the voting, while Worcester State and Fitchburg State rounded out in the poll in seventh and eighth place, respectively.

Now in its fifth decade of service to eight institutions in the Commonwealth, the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference has a rich and storied tradition of competitive success while celebrating excellence in the classroom. MASCAC member schools include Bridgewater State University, Fitchburg State University, Framingham State University, MCLA, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State University, Westfield State University and Worcester State University. Two other institutions, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University, are affiliate members of the conference in the sport of men’s ice hockey.
