Fitchburg State Men’s Soccer joins the fight against breast cancer
In support of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Fitchburg State men’s soccer team will be hosting its second annual game in support of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Saturday, October 12th, as the Falcons host the Bears of Bridgewater State University in a MASCAC Conference match-up at 10 a.m. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Fitchburg State men’s soccer team will be wearing pink socks during the game.
The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.
NBCAM was founded in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical. The aim of the NBCAM from the start has been to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.
In 1993 Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of the Estée Lauder Companies founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and established the pink ribbon as its symbol, though this was not the first time the ribbon was used to symbolize breast cancer.[2] In the fall of 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation had handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors. The Play 4 the Cure movement, created by Mystx Field Hockey Club founder, director and head coach Tina Reinprecht, is dedicated to mothers of players in the Mystx Field Hockey Club who fought the fight against breast cancer. Recently the National Foundation for Cancer Research teamed up with the “Play 4 the Cure” movement, enabling athletes to support NFCR’s efforts in funding cancer research and to provide cancer prevention education as well as early detection information to the public.
All Falcon fans are encouraged to wear their favorite pink gear and support the Fitchburg State men’s soccer team in their fight against breast cancer.
