Buzzards Bay, Mass. (March 10, 2010) — The Falcons of Fitchburg State College were picked seventh overall in the 2010 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Softball Pre-Season Coaches Poll this afternoon.
Bridgewater State, last year’s MASCAC tournament champion, captured four first place votes to amass 60 points in taking the top spot in the poll, as the Bears outdistanced second place and 2009 conference regular season champion Westfield State’s total of 53 points that included two first place votes. Framingham State, which received the other two first place votes in the poll, follows in third place with 49 points, while Salem State and Worcester State are next in fourth and fifth place, respectively, with 37 and 33 points. MCLA follows in sixth place with 30 points, while Fitchburg State and Massachusetts Maritime round out this year’s coaches’ poll in seventh and eighth place with 17 and nine points, respectively.
In its 39th year of existence, the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference is comprised of eight NCAA Division III member institutions: Bridgewater State College, Fitchburg State College, Framingham State College, MCLA, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State College, Westfield State College and Worcester State College. Two other NCAA Division III member schools, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University, are affiliate members of the conference in the sport of men’s ice hockey.
