Fitchburg State Splits On Day Three Of Florida Trip
The Fitchburg State softball team split on day three of its Clermont, Florida trip, registering an 8-0 victory in game one and falling 2-1 to Knox University in game two.

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 16, 2011) – The Fitchburg State softball team split on day three of its Clermont, Florida trip, registering an 8-0 victory in game one and falling 2-1 to Knox University in game two.
Fitchburg State 8, Macalester 0
In game one, Fitchburg State exploded for five runs in the opening inning and cruised to an 8-1 victory for its fourth victory of the season.
Senior Nicole Monroe (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) provided the big spark for Fitchburg State, blasting a double, homerun and four RBI, while freshman Jessica Drago (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) notched two singles and a pair of runs. Freshman Megan Breault (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) was also strong with two singles and four RBI.
Junior Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) earned the victory for the Falcons, tossing a complete game shutout. Cousins limited Macalester to only three hits in the contest, striking out five with only one walk.
Fitchburg State scored all the runs it would need over the first two innings. Sophomore Melissa Wadman (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) led off the first inning with a single up the middle and senior Karen Skoczylas (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) walked to set up Monroe’s three-run homer. Drago followed suit one batter later with a single and a pair of steals before scoring on Breault’s two-run single.
In the second inning, Fitchburg State wrapped up its scoring as freshman Shannon Fitzgerald (Blackstone, Mass./Blackstone Regional) led off with a single and Monroe belted a RBI double. Drago was then issued a walk and Breault stepped in to drive home two runs with a single.
Knox 2, Fitchburg State 1
In game two, Fitchburg State collected ten hits, but saw a 1-0 lead slip way in the fifth in to suffer its third loss of the season to Knox University, 2-1.
Wadman and senior Kristen Love (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) led the Fitchburg State offense, posting two hits apiece, while Breault added to her solid afternoon with a double in the game.
Monroe suffered the loss in the circle for the Falcons, tossing five innings with three K’s and three walks. She was strong through the first four innings of play, but Knox touched for two runs in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. The senior slinger allowed only five hits in the contest, while Drago worked a scoreless sixth and seventh inning.
Fitchburg State (4-3, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it competes in a doubleheader with Bethel (Minn.) and Wisconsin Superior starting at 5:30 p.m.
