Fitchburg State Picked Sixth In MASCAC Pre-Season Poll

Falcons finish with 24 points in Softball Pre-Season Coaches Poll

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 27, 2013) – The Fitchburg State softball team was recently selected sixth in the 2013 MASCAC Pre-Season Coaches Poll as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.

The Bears of Bridgewater State University were selected as the pre-season favorite to claim the 2013 MASCAC Softball championship in a vote of the league’s coaches. Bridgewater State captured four first place votes to amass 58 points, while defending MASCAC tournament champions Salem State grabbed two first place votes to collect 53 points in claiming the runner up spot.

Westfield State finished in third place with 45 points that includes one first place vote, while defending MASCAC regular season champion Worcester State rounded out the top four, collecting 42 points and the remaining first place vote. Framingham State snagged fifth place with 39 points, while Fitchburg State placed sixth with 24 points. MCLA and Massachusetts Maritime round out this year’s poll in seventh and eighth place, respectively, with 19 and eight points.

The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, the nation’s oldest Division III men’s and women’s playing conference, has a rich and storied tradition of competitive success while celebrating excellence in the classroom. MASCAC member schools include Bridgewater State University, Fitchburg State University, Framingham State University, MCLA, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State University, Westfield State University and Worcester State University. Two other institutions, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University, are affiliate members of the conference in the sports of men’s ice hockey and football, while Western Connecticut State University will join the conference as an affiliate member in the sport of football for the 2013-14 academic year.
