Fitchburg State Selected Third In MASCAC Pre-Season Poll

Falcons finish with 41 points in Softball Pre-Season Coaches Poll

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 20, 2014) – The Fitchburg State softball team was recently selected third in the 2014 MASCAC Pre-Season Coaches Poll as announced by the league office Thursday morning.

The Bears of Bridgewater State University were selected as the pre-season favorite to claim the 2014 MASCAC Softball championship in a vote of the league’s coaches. Bridgewater State, the defending regular season and tournament champion, captured six first place votes to amass 62 points, while tournament runner-up MCLA received 55 points, including the remaining first place votes in claiming the second spot.

Fitchburg State finished in third place with 41 points that includes one first place vote, while Salem State rounded out the top four, collecting 37 points and the remaining first place vote. Framingham State snagged fifth place with 30 points, while Westfield State following in sixth place with 29 points. Worcester State and Massachusetts Maritime round out this year’s poll in seventh and eighth place, respectively, with 26 and eight points.

The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, the nation’s oldest Division III men’s and women’s playing conference, has a rich and storied tradition of competitive success while celebrating excellence in the classroom. MASCAC member schools include Bridgewater State University, Fitchburg State University, Framingham State University, MCLA, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State University, Westfield State University and Worcester State University. Two other institutions, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University, are affiliate members of the conference in the sports of men’s ice hockey and football, while Western Connecticut State University joined the conference as an affiliate member in the sport of football for the 2013-14 academic year.
