Fahey notches first collegiate double-double in Falcons season opener
WORCESTER, Mass. (November 15, 2010) –The Fitchburg State women’s basketball team opened its 2010-11 campaign in convincing fashion this evening, defeating Clark University, 77-55 in non-conference action.

Fitchburg State controlled the ball from the opening tip, posting a 13 point lead at the half en route to its first victory of the season. Freshman Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) led all Fitchburg State scorers with her first collegiate double-double, posting a game-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and adding 11 rebounds. The Falcons also received double-digit efforts from seniors Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton), Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) and Molly Maloney (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) who finished with 13, 12 and 11 points respectively.
Trailing 7-2 in the opening two minutes of the contest, Fitchburg State quickly erased its deficit, using a commanding 19-1 run over ten minutes of play. Senior Kim Duprey (Bernardston, Mass./Pioneer Valley) sparked the rally, tying the score up at 7-7 with a shot from downtown, while Maloney added seven points in the run, including the final jumper at the 8:12 mark. The Falcons maintained their 13 point lead into the break, posting a 40-27 lead at intermission led by Proffitt’s, nine first half points.
Clark started the second half strong again, chipping away at the Fitchburg State with a 7-0 run in the first three minutes, but the Falcons responded again, going up by as much as 22 midway through the period. Fahey sparked the Falcons with nine points and seven rebounds in the period, while Jacobs added eight points on 3-of-6 shooting.
Fitchburg State was strong offensively, shooting 41.8% from the field, including 45.2% in the first half. The Falcons connected on 6-of-21 shots from beyond the arc, while hitting 15-of-23 from the charity stripe
Fitchburg State (1-0, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Friday as it participates in the 2010 Wheaton College Invitational vs. Plymouth State at 8 p.m.
