Fitchburg State Falls To Plymouth State, 71-64
The Fitchburg State women’s basketball team fell to Plymouth State University, 71-64 at the 2010 Wheaton College Tip-Off Tournament this evening.
Falcons draw Rivier College tomorrow at 2 p.m.
NORTON, Mass. (November 19, 2010) –The Fitchburg State women’s basketball team fell to Plymouth State University, 71-64 at the 2010 Wheaton College Tip-Off Tournament this evening.
With the victory, Plymouth State advances to tomorrow’s championship match vs. Wheaton College at 4 p.m. while Fitchburg State will battle Rivier College in the consolation round at 2 p.m.
Senior Kelley Rogers (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) led the Fitchburg State offense, totaling a team-high 13 points and five rebounds. The senior guard shot 5-of-12 from the field and 2-of-3 from the free-throw line, while draining a solo shot from downtown. Classmates Kim Duprey (Bernardston, Mass./Pioneer Valley) and Molly Maloney (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) also notched double-figures with 11 points and 12 points respectively, while senior Kristen Love (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) controlled the boards with a game-high 16 rebounds.
In a first half that witnessed six ties and seven lead changes, Fitchburg State used 15 second chance points to grab a slim 30-29 lead at the break. Senior Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) led the Falcons first half attack with nine points and two rebounds, while Maloney and Duprey added five points apiece.
In the second half, Plymouth State came out gunning, rifling off a 15-6 run in the opening four minutes for an eight point lead at the 16:01 mark. Over the next four minutes, the Panthers extended their lead to 16 (52-36), taking advantage of three, Fitchburg State turnovers and three missed shots.
Plymouth State maintained its double-digit lead for most of the second frame, until Fitchburg State inched back late in the period. The Falcons closed the Panther lead to only six following a Rogers three at 3:08, but that’s as close as Fitchburg State would come, notching only one more trifecta over the final minutes of the contest.
The Panthers broke the game open in the second period, shooting 41% from the field and 37.5% from three point range, while Fitchburg State hit only 10 of its 32 attempts in the second period. The Falcons shot 33.8% for the match, while Plymouth State finished 23-of-61 from the field.
