Fitchburg State Extends Past MCLA, 80-70

Falcons now a perfect 3-0 in MASCAC play behind Fahey's 22 points
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (January 14, 2014) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team used an up tempo offense to push past the Trailblazers of MCLA, 80-70 in MASCAC action this evening.
With the victory, the Falcons remain perfect in conference play moving to 3-0 (7-5 overall) while the Trailblazers fall to 0-3 in the league (4-10 overall).
Senior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass.) led the Falcons with a game high 22 points and nine rebounds, while juniors Rebecca Fluet (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass.) each had 16 points. Junior Britney Payne (Franklin, Ky.) also added 12.
MCLA was paced by Kaitlyn Chenevert's 13 points. She was joined in double figures by Michaela Siver's 12 and Mariah Brown's 10.
In the opening half, MCLA came out strong breaking through a strong Falcons defense en route to an early ten point lead at 16-6. Siver had ten points in the run for the Trailblazers, but Fitchburg State came back strong, using a 23-6 run to grab control with a 29-22 advantage. The Falcons continued to pressure MCLA and led by as many as 17 points before settling on a 46-31 advantage at halftime.
The closing half saw Fitchburg State continue its up tempo game. The Trailblazers cut their deficit to 11 with 18 minutes to play following an Ashley Clawson triple, but the Falcons responded with a 13-3 spurt to put the game away. MCLA would get no closer than the final margin as Fitchburg State caused 34 Trailblazer turnovers throughout the match.
Fluet was excellent for Falcons adding six assists, five boards, and four steals, while Fahey and Payne were each tough on the glass, recording nine rebounds each.
For MCLA, Brown added nine caroms to her 10 point effort. She also finished with 5 steals. The Trailblazers were hampered by a poor performance from the free throw line making just 13 of 33 attempts.
Fitchburg State will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Fisher College at 1 p.m. The Trailblazers will go out of league on Thursday when they travel to Western Connecticut State.
