Women’s Basketball Picked Sixth In Pre-Season Poll

Falcons finish with 20 points in MASCAC’s Pre-Season Coaches Poll
FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 1, 2013) – The Fitchburg State women’s basketball team was recently selected sixth in the 2013-14 MASCAC Women’s Basketball Pre-Season Coaches Poll as announced by the league officer Thursday afternoon.
The Bridgewater State Bears were selected as the pre-season pick to win the 2013-14 MASCAC Women’s Basketball championship as voted on by the league’s coaches. Narrowly beating out Westfield State for the top spot with four first place votes and 46 points, the Bears look to claim
their third straight conference tournament title under reigning MASCAC Co-Coach of the Year Bridgett Casey. She shared the honor with Worcester State’s Karen Tessmer.
Earning three first place votes and 45 points are last year’s tournament runner-up Westfield State. The Owls bring back 2012-13 MASCAC Rookie of the Year Keri Doldoorian who averaged nine points and four rebounds a game last season. In the third slot is Framingham State with 28 points followed by Worcester State in fourth with 25 points.
Following just a point behind Worcester State are the Vikings of Salem State with 24 points, while Fitchburg State and MCLA round out the polls in sixth and seventh with 20 points and eight points, respectively.
The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, the nation’s first Division III men’s and women’s playing conference, has a rich and storied tradition of competitive success while celebrating excellence in the classroom. MASCAC core member schools include Bridgewater State University, Fitchburg State University, Framingham State University, MCLA, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State University, Westfield State University and Worcester State University. Two other institutions, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University, are affiliate members of the conference in the sports of football and men’s ice hockey, while Western Connecticut State University joined the conference as an affiliate member in football beginning in 2013-14.
