KEENE, N.H. – The Fitchburg State women’s basketball team opened the second half of its 2015-16 campaign this evening, dropping a 65-29 decision to the Owls of Keene State College in non-conference action at the Spalding Gymnasium.

KEENE, N.H. – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team opened the second half of its 2015-16 campaign this evening, dropping a 65-29 decision to the Owls of Keene State College in non-conference action at the Spalding Gymnasium.
Keene State opened the contest on a 6-2, following a basketball by junior Briana Pelton the Owls answered with a trio of jumpers from sophomore Sandi Purcell, junior Amanda Petrow and classmate Sarah Kober three minutes into the frame.
Fitchburg State answered with a layup by sophomore Michaela McTomney and a pair of buckets from senior Erika Schneider to cut the deficit to just a single basket (10-8) before Keene State closed out the first quarter on a 5-0 run on as newcomer Valarie Martin and Petrow converted layups to make the score 15-8 after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, the Owls added to its lead, going on an 18-0 stretch to start the second period (33-10). Kober led the way with seven of her 13 first half points, while Martin added a pair of jumpers as well en-route to taking a 40-12 advantage into the break.
Following intermission, the two team traded baskets on a layup from Purcell and jumper by junior guard Shabeli Villa. Keene State proceeded to go on an 8-2 streak as Purcell, Petrow and senior Ryanne Williams notched buckets for the 50-19 margin going into the final quarter.
The Green and Gold opened the fourth quarter with two layups by Schneider before the Owls upped its lead to 60-27on a jumper by newcomers Courtney Sheehy and Lydia St. Pierre with just over four minutes left in the contest, resulting in the 65-29 final.
For Fitchburg State, Schneider registered a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds as well as one assist, one steal and a block, while Villa added six points, one assist and one block for the Falcons.
Keene State was paced by Martin, who posted a game best 16 points, two caroms, two steals and an assist, while Kober notched a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds for the hosts.
Throughout the contest, Keene State State held a 55-44 advantage in rebounds, including a commanding 26-12 margin on the offensive glass. From the field, the Green and Gold shot 12-for-50 (24.0%), while going 4-of-9 (44.4%) from the line. The Owls finished the contest shooting 27-for-83 (32.5%) in addition to going 7-for-10 (70.0%) from the line.
Fitchburg State (0-12, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Wednesday as it opens MASCAC play, hosting the Owls of Westfield State University for a contest starting at 5:30 p.m. Keene State (1-0, 2-0 LEC) will travel to Southern Maine University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
