Westfield State Clips Fitchburg State, 15-11
Junior Stephanie Lenhardt (Duxbury, Mass.) scored a game-high seven points (2 goals, 5 assists), while sophomore Blair Smith (Milford, Mass.) and senior Lee Meskevich (Becket, Mass.) each had three goals and an assist to lead the Westfield State University women’s lacrosse team to a 15-11 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over Fitchburg State University this evening at Alumni Field.
Laferriere and White net three goals each to pace Falcons
WESTFIELD, Mass. (April 5, 2014) – Junior Stephanie Lenhardt (Duxbury, Mass.) scored a game-high seven points (2 goals, 5 assists), while sophomore Blair Smith (Milford, Mass.) and senior Lee Meskevich (Becket, Mass.) each had three goals and an assist to lead the Westfield State University women’s lacrosse team to a 15-11 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over Fitchburg State University this evening at Alumni Field.
Westfield State held on for the home victory to move to 2-0 in the MASCAC and 5-4 overall, while Fitchburg State drops to 0-2 and 2-6.
The Owls jumped out to a 10-4 halftime lead and took an 11-4 lead 29 seconds into the second half on a Smith goal from a Lenhardt feed before Fitchburg State tallied five unanswered goals over the next 14 minutes to pull within two, 11-9, at the 15-minute mark.
The hosts regrouped to outscore the Falcons, 4-1, over the next seven minutes to take a 15-10 lead with 7:30 remaining in the match en-route to the 15-11 final.
Also scoring twice for the Owls were freshman Caroline Smart (Weymouth, Mass.) and sophomoreTaylor Eaton (Nahant, Mass.), while senior Jen Carew (Billerica, Mass.) chipped in with game highs of five ground balls and seven draw controls for Westfield State.
Freshman Ali Laferriere (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and junior Lindsay White (Hanover, Mass.) each scored three goals for the Falcons, while Laferriere added a team high six draw controls for the visitors.
Throughout the contest, Westfield State held a commanding 44-20.advantage in shots, while also registering a narrow 16-12 margin in draw controls. In net, sophomore Elizabeth Darrigo (Billerica, Mass.)stopped 19 shots for Fitchburg State in the complete game effort, while newcomer Emma Kervick (Wilbraham, Mass.) made four saves for the Owls en-route to her second victory of the season.
Fitchburg State (2-6, 0-2 MASCAC) will be back in action on Monday as it hosts the Pilgrims of New England College for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Westfield State (5-4, 2-0 MASCAC) will host Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
