Falcons Notch First Win of Season over Chargers, 10-9
Fitchburg State University (1-1) women’s lacrosse notched their first victory of the season as they defeated Colby-Sawyer (0-2), 10-9 in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon.

NEW LONDON, NH - Fitchburg State University (1-1) women's lacrosse notched their first victory of the season as they defeated Colby-Sawyer (0-2), 10-9 in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon. Sophomore Ali Laferriere scored her third goal of the game on a free position shot with 21 seconds remaining for the game-winner.
Laferriere kicked off the scoring barrage for the Green & Gold at the 29:30 mark of the opening stanza, while the Chargers countered seven minutes later by Maryalice Gurnee on a helper by Molly Mulcahy.
The Falcons would go on a 4-0 run to take a 5-1 lead midway through the first half with two tallies by sophomore Andrea Comeau. Both teams exchanged goals before the Chargers scored twice in the final three minutes to cut the deficit to 7-5 heading into halftime.
Sara Berry scored twice, followed by a goal by Alyssia Janak to cap a 3-0 Charger run, giving the hosts their first lead of the contest at 8-7. The squads then traded goals in a tightly defended second half, with Fitchburg State tying it at 5:28 on a Corinne DeSimone marker assisted by Leferriere.
In the final minutes of play with the scored tied 9-9, Fitchburg State's Laferriere took advantage of a free position shot with 21 seconds on the clock and put the ball past the Chargers goalkeeper for the late game heroics.
Laferriere also tallied two assists to go along with her hat-trick, while Comeau had a three-goal effort of her own in the winning effort.
Colby-Sawyer was led by Berry with three goals, while Mulcahy contributed with a goal and two helpers.
Junior net minder Elizabeth Darrigo notched seven saves in the win, while Meghan Castellano made 11 stops for the Chargers in the loss.
The Falcons will be back in action on Sunday, March 22 as they travel to Rivier at 5:00 pm. Colby-Sawyer will look for their first win of the season as they travel to Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday to kick off North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play at 1:00 pm.
