WPI Shuts Down Fitchburg State, 1-0

Swan registers one save in Falcons setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 13, 2008) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 setback to WPI in non-conference action this afternoon at Elliot Field.

Sophomore Kristen Garza (Kingston, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) led the WPI offensive attack, scoring the lone goal of the match in the 67^th minute. Fitchburg State dominated the offensive front throughout the match, out-shooting the Engineers 19-11 with a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Fitchburg State had many scoring opportunities in the match as freshman Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) totaled six shots on net, but WPI was able to connect midway through the second half to break the scoring silence on Garza's fourth goal of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) recorded one save in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while sophomore Abaigeal Caras (Essex, Conn./Williams School) totaled 12 saves for the Engineers.

Fitchburg State (4-2, 0-0 MASCAC) is back in action on Wednesday as it travels to Newbury College at 3:30 p.m. WPI (4-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) will host Worcester State  on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
