How It Happened
Westfield State took a 3-0 advantage to open the contest as Marena Morales netted a pair of markers and a goal from Bri McPhillips before Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 3-1 when senior Jessica St. George (Dracut, MA) collected her 28th goal on the season.
In the second quarter of play, the Owls pushed the lead to 6-1 with Emily Heslin and Mercedes Rozzi connecting on scores, but the Falcons answered back as St. George notched her second score of the contest. The hosts extended the margin to 9-2 going into the break with Brooke Oliveri netting two goals and a score from Heslin.
Following the intermission, Fitchburg State trimmed the deficit to 9-3 when junior Samantha Azzari (Haverhill, MA) registered her 22nd tally on the season, but Westfield State responded with goals from Heslin, Oliveria and McPhillips for the 13-3 lead.
In the final period of play, the Green and Gold cut the lead to 13-4 when junior Hannah Azzari (Haverhill, MA) collecting her 28th score of the year before the Owls secured the victory as Christina Roncarati found the back of the net, resulting in the 17-4 final
